Why Do I Shoot Film?

For the love of science

It's science really! I love how it's a chemical reaction that makes the image, photons hitting light-sensitive silver halide crystals on a film, for them to be filtered and colour transformed into an image with developing. All I am saying is the idea that a little chemical reaction like that happens inside my camera every time I take a shot, not to mention the fact that there's only a limited amount per roll!

Roll With it

So there’s commonly only 36 per roll in a 35mm film roll. In some instances like shooting Ektachrome, that means a dollar per shot, so in some situations, you really need to make sure a shot is worth it which also means you kinda have to be more in the moment, and for someone like me who shoots manual, it really requires to have your thinking cap on!

Being In “The Moment”.

So what do I mean when I say “more in the moment”? Well, what I am trying to say is that you really need to line up a shot more perfectly, make sure the composition is right and that things don’t look confusing, all that composition jazz. To be in the moment is to feel more integrated with what's around you, and makes you appreciate smaller things, now normal digital photography can do the same thing! But I feel that film produces that feeling in a stronger way.

The “Feeling of Film”

There’s no denying that there is a “Look of film”. It’s commonly the main reason why people shoot film, and I shoot for the look of film!

That near imperfect look somehow gives it more character, it is hard to explain because it’s mainly a feeling! Digital has its own look, it’s clean and sometimes even clinical, sure you can work around that and edit it to be more film-like but there’s nothing like shooting real film, so why not shoot real film!

The Look

Ok, so, within my collection of film photos, I have all of the film stocks labelled out and organised, mainly because each film has a unique look to how they work with colours like Kodak Gold has a warmer feel than ProImage. The fact that different film has different characteristics adds a level of factors to take into account when taking photos and personally I feel like that is fun!

Anyways, I hope you enjoy what you see on my site!
